A note from Emily Springsteen:

The purpose of this song is to educate the public about the disturbingly widespread damages caused by the practice of underwater seismic surveying as a means to detect oil deposits, and to persuade the public and policy makers to stop this practice globally.  Seismic blasting is unethical. It should be illegal and internationally enforced as such.

What is "seismic blasting"?
This is a process by which seismic air guns are compressed and exploded underwater, then used as sonar to find oil beneath the seafloor. The shockwaves from the blasts are so loud, they are detectable up to two-thousand, five-hundred miles away. The noise from these explosions is indiscriminate and detrimental across marine ecosystems, from the smallest to largest lifeforms. Whales and dolphins listen with their ears, using sonar to "see" their food and generally survive. Seismic testing painfully blasts out their eardrums, deafens them, and ultimately kills them. Occurring undersea, most people are not aware this is happening. The crew-person hired to run the blast boats may not be aware of the far-reaching effects of each explosion. Law makers, trying to appease increasing demands for fossil fuel, may not be aware of the widespread damage of their policies and blast permits. Oil dependency is a system problem, and the first step toward positive change is education. The US Dollar has been backed by oil trade agreements (see OPEC) since the 1970s. Our systematic financial dependence on oil has become a global problem.

Please have a heart and share the message of this video. The ocean is not a toilet. It is the live-blood of our planet. I extend my deepest thanks to all those who assisted in video production.

OFFICIAL SINGLE RELEASE!
January, 2020

Emily Springsteen's original single,
The Ten Cent Bottle Law
is available now on your favorite music download and streaming service!

Emily Springsteen presents a playful, yet common-sense,
eco and pocketbook friendly case
for adopting cash for trash recycling programs that really work,
like the Michigan Bottle Deposit Law!

"...Turn your trash to fast cash
You see, it's very feasible
'Chi-CHING!' you will hear
If the bar code is readable!"

A NOTE ON "THE TEN CENT BOTTLE LAW"
I grew up in a state that has had a highly effective recycling incentive program in place since before I was born. The well-established “Michigan Bottle Deposit Law” allows for the culturally accepted norm that empty carbonated beverage bottles and cans are the equivalent of cash money! High school students run fund raising drives, collecting “empties” for athletic departments and school enrichment trips. Broke young adults can count on a few bucks for gas money if their parents offer them the stash of “returnables” piling up in their garage. You can bet that after a college football game, opportunists, motivated by their own financial benefit, will scour the campus, removing any “ten-centers” left by tailgaters and leaving a cleaner environment for all!

After moving to the Sunshine State of Florida, I found myself gigging in venue after venue where hard-working and well-intentioned bar staff perpetually cleared their countertops by dumping valuable bottles and cans into the landfill basket. I cringe every time I see that cash potential lost and the recyclable material wasted.

At the time of writing this, 11 out of 50 US states have a bottle return practice in effect. My song, “The Ten Cent Bottle Law,” argues that cash for trash isn’t just a good idea, it’s a way of life where I come from. If you live in a Can State, you get it. If you don’t, you’re missing out on a lucrative opportunity that really works! Let’s spread the good word to our friends and our legislators, and get everyone on board! In song or in action, please promote, "The Ten Cent Bottle Law"!
FULL SONG LYRICS:
Hey, listen up, People! I'll tell you a truth,
About a practice performed in the land of my youth!
There's a policy, functioning, forty years strong
All the states in the Union, they ought join 'long

When Michigan voted, with foresight, they saw
The benefits of the Ten Cent Bottle Law
Well our countryside's fine, less aluminum glitter
Our folks have incentive to withhold their litter!

Oh how I long to return to the land
Where a kid gets corrected for crushing a can!
Turn your trash to fast cash, you see,
          it's very feasible,
          "Chi-CHING!" you will hear,
if the bar code is readable!

Have you ever wanted a savings account?
Put your cans in the corner,
Your funds, they will mount!
In Michigan, residents never go broke
If money gets tight, they'll go find an old Coke

To the states left without it,
Your systems are glitched!
In Michigan you can find cash in a ditch
In the spring, in particular, after the thaw
Lies the promise of wealth
From that old Bottle Law!

          CHORUS

Save the refuse from landfills, put dough in your pockets
It just makes cents, 'fore you try it, don't knock it!
It's not an anomaly, a fifth of our nation's
On board with this eco- win- win situation!

          CHORUS

Well, the Bottle Law works as a stimulus plan
And not just from the currency swapped for the can
Recycling consumers go back to the store
Returning their empties and shopping for more

Jerry Seinfeld established the right state of mind
Write your congressmen, folks,
You don't have to be blind
To the fact that your profits are there in your hands
Gather money, what's better?
And clean up the land!

         CHORUS
